ASI at 2013 NAPPSA Scientific Conference and Exposition
African Scientific Institute (ASI) was invited to participate in the Nigerian Association of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists in the Americas (NAPPSA) Scientific Conference and Exposition, their 7th Annual Scientific Conference held in Philadelphia, PA September 19-20, 2013. NAPPSA is an umbrella organization of Nigerian pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, allied scientists and the academia in the Americas.

An unprecedented number of Nigeria’s cabinet members were in attendance and gave speeches relevant to the theme of the conference: “Global Trends in Healthcare Delivery: Partnering and Building Sustainable Pharmaceutical Bridges” and the Business Forum on the 20th focused on “Attracting Foreign Direct Investment to the Nigerian Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Sectors.” The Minister for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Prof. Olusegun Aganga (CON) made a very passionate presentation on “Opportunities for Trade and Investment in the Nigerian Pharmaceutical Sector.” Other speakers included the Hon. Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo (OON, NPOM) who spoke on “Infrastructural Requirements for Transforming the Nigerian Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Sector.” Dr. Precious Gbenol, Sr. Special Assistant to the President on MDGs; Dr. Paul Orhii, the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC); Dr. Doug Fridsma, Director U.S. Office of Science and Technology; Dr Sumant Ramachandra, Sr. Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Hospira Inc. USA; and Dr. Ashifi Gogo, Co-Founder and CEO, Sproxil Inc. USA, all delivered insightful and hopeful presentations while elaborating on investment opportunities and challenges in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. The sessions were moderated by Dr. Mrs. Henrietta Ukwu, M.D, FACP, FRAPS, and Senior Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, Princeton, NJ.
The Hon. Minister of External Affairs, Prof. (Mrs.) Viola Onwuliri delivered a goodwill message from President Goodluck Jonathan.
ASI was represented by Dr. Eddie Neal, Senior ASI Fellow and Member of ASI Board as well as the President & CEO Scientex Corporation and Ms. Ifeyinwa Amadi-Davis, an ASI Fellow and Environmental Scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They seized the opportunity of their participation to establish contacts with members of NAPPSA and some of the attendees at the conference.
